Предупреждение для молодых девушек

His Honor held the Court open yesterday morning for the purpose of disposing of the case of Eliza Ploss, an interesting young girl, convicted last week upon an indictment for grand larceny. The evidence in this case showed that on the 13th of January last, the prisoner picked up a purse containing $270, the property of a poor woman. Besides the money, the purse contained a receipt for rent, containing the full name and address of the owner of the money. It was also advertised extensively, and the advertisement brought to the notice of the prisoner and her mother. The money was finally traced to the prisoner, and the woman who had lost the money called on her and begged her to return it, but the prisoner's mother said that the description given of the purse was incorrect: the one found by her daughter being a new one, and not containing any rent receipt. After her arrest, the prisoner confessed that she had thrown the original pocket-book away, and substituted a new one, of a different shape, for the purpose of deceiving the owner. She also stated that her brother had taken the money away from her and gone off to the army. After her conviction. His Honor postponed sentence for a week, stating that if restitution was made to the loser of the money he would impose a light sentence, but as the money was not refunded she was yesterday brought up for sentence. Judge RUSSEL said to the prisoner that he would still give her an opportunity to reform and escape severe punishment, provided her friends would restore the money. He should therefore send her to the House of Refuge, where she would be kept for seven years, until she was twenty-one, unless in the meantime the money was returned, when he would have her released. The prisoner probably did not realize, until her sentence was pronounced, that she had committed a grave crime deserving of severe punishment. She burst into tears, and clung screaming to her mother, begging her not to leave her, and to save her from prison. Her case should be a warning and a reminder that honesty is the best policy.
Кратко: Элиза взяла кошелек с 270 баксами, за что судья собрался отправить ее на семь лет, пока ей не исполнится 21 год, в некий House of Refuge.
занятно, что Элиза в свои четырнадцать называется "интересной"
